Church Planting??
A couple of questions I have about church planting.
1) How do you know when you are taking a risk for church planting? Or just being foolish or unreasonable? Somewhere those two variables need to be considered.
2) How often should we be church planting? Do we just wait and see our current churches grow and increase in numbers, or should we always be actively seeking new locations and people to plant churches?
3) What are the basic things you need to plant a church? Apart from the obvious ones. People, money, venue etc.
Be cool to hear peoples thoughts on this stuff

Maybe it depends on what it is you're risking. If you risk failure, then that is a worthy risk to take, but if you're risking the spiritual growth of young church members... then it's foolish.
2)
I think both. We should be actively seeking the potential for new churches but that doesn't mean we plant them immediately. Under most circumstances, churches need to have a certain stability before another church can come from them. Not denying that God works through unstable, dismal church groups though.

As Mikey said on Sunday, we need to have a belief in the "product" we're selling (the gospel).
Patience and trust to keep battling on but also the wisdom and courage to pull the plug if the church isn't working.
thanks for posting these thoughts Josh, good stuff.
perhaps the answer to a lot of it is 'the vibe'. if you are really desiring to serve and trust God, then it'll be clear to you.
Good questions Josh.
1) I don't think you should plant churches "because" there is a risk, but where there is an opportunity. It may involve risk, but if there is an opportunity and it is not foolish or unreasonable then it's great!
2) I don't think it should be done at the expense of the growing to maturity of existing churches. Paul had an opportunity to spread the gospel in Troas but instead chose to respond to the crisis in the existing Corinthian church (2 Cor 2:12-14).
3) What did Paul have? The message of the Gospel, a passion to see people saved. I don't even think you need money and a venue to start with (although obviously they are good things).
You've got to be pretty active. It's too easy to get comfy and not change for the next 50 years...
